My friend, Eric, suggested that I go to the website of the Islamic Center of America, which is located in Detroit.
It was heartening to see the following message posted on the home page:
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful, The Islamic Center of America unequivocally condemns the heinous acts of terrorism against the people of London. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the British people.
Islam considers the use of such brutality to be totally unacceptable. No cause could ever be justified by such immoral acts. We pray to the Almighty God for a speedy recovery of those who have been injured – physically and emotionally – as a result of senseless and inexcusable acts of terror. We are all one humanity and we will continue to pray for safety and peace in America and throughout the world.”
I have maintained that the vast majority of true believers of Islam do not condone the violence perpetrated by the those radicals who have hijacked the faith. When more of the Islamic communities make such public condemnations, and ostracize those who preach violence against innocents, terrorism will begin to disappear. It will have to come from within the Islamic community.
Thanks to Imam Hassan Al-Qazwini for his courageous public announcement.
